Dome

Cone

PEV

  • PEV, Paul-Emilie-Victor, Mound
  • 3609 m
  • Primary factor 1296 m
  • Known ascents:
    DateName(s)Comments
June 12, 1996 Pierre Grossman + 7 1st ascent**, but see NOTE below.
    June 1998 John Starbuck + x 2nd ascent
    June 1999 tbd 3rd ascent
May 2000 Anne Picard, Charlotte Steinmeir, Christine Watkins 4th ascent

NOTE: The first ascent is disputed. Jim Lowther believes that his team climbed PEV back in 1988. Based on the expedition write-up it is not at all clear that Jim Lowther climbed PEV. This report says that the mountain was climbed along its south ridge from the upper glacier. This makes sense wrt. Deception Dome, less so if they actually climbed PEV. Jim named the peak Deception Dome, since their primary goal was to climb the second highest in Greenland, Dome. However, the party discovered that they were completely in the wrong location relative to climbing Dome. Thus, it is in fact possible that the peak that currently is called Deception Dome (see this), was climbed by Jim Lowther. It is also a fact that they only climbed one peak in this area. Therefore, Jim Lowther cannot be credited with a first ascent of both peaks. Jim has informed me that he can find photographs from the ascent. Such photos would certainly resolve this issue when compared with pictures taken by our G4 expedition in 2004.

Deception Dome

  • Deception Dome
  • 3526 m
  • Primary factor 151 m
  • Known ascents:
    DateName(s)Comments
1988 Jim Lowther + x 1st ascent, from Woolley Glacier
May 23, 2004 Espen Nordahl + 7 2nd ascent, first from GBF BC, first ski descent

NOTE: See the text under PEV. Either Jim Lowther climbed Deception Dome OR he climbed PEV. Jim has informed me that he should find photographs from the trip. These will, when compared with pictures taken by the G4 expedition in 2004 resolve this issue. Until these pictures has been produced, it seems reasonable to assume that Jim actually climbed Deception Dome and NOT PEV.
