How to get there:
This report decribes access starting from the road that serves the summer alpine ski area on the Folgefonnen glacier. One may drive all the way there or stop at the nice parking area on the right hand side at location N60.24762, E006.40766, elevation near 850 meter.
Note:
This is a route from the summit of Steinafjell. This route crosses the lake Juklavatnet. This lake is a hydro power reservoir, the water level may change as much as 100 vertical meter. This description assumes that the water level is pretty high. A very low water surface could cause additional problems.
Route description:
From the summit of Steinafjell, ski north-west to near location N60.22940, E6.37286, descend to the more level flank below. Turn more south-east here. Continue gently downhill towards location N60.22353, E6.37588, elevation near 1184 meter. This is the end of the sloping flank, you should be just on the left side (looking downhill) of a distinct gully. Ski right into the upper end of this gully. From here, you may continue downhill, then left to reach the lake. The upper slope is 25 degrees.
Ski west across a small part of the lake and enter the natural spot from where a reasonable slope (small valley) provides a good access route to the main south crest of the peak. Turn north and ski easy slopes to the summit marked by a rock.
Comments:
Harald and I was back in the area above Jondalen for yet another good day of spring skiing. The forecast was very nice and Steinafjell was our main goal. I had looked at the map before this trip and noted that it should be possible to ski across to this small peak near lake Juklavatnet as well. Harald agreed to this plan. We left the summit of Steinafjell around 1130. Skiing down to the small, key gully was easy. We entered from its right side, also very doable, but observed that access from the opposite (left) side would be slightly easier. The lake was almost full and easy to cross. The final ascent also easy on nice snow. We arrived at the summit after about 1:20. Nice and sunny, a good break was appropriate.
We next skied back down to the lake and followed our route back, pretty high (about 1350 meter) across Steinafjell in order to ski down our route of ascent to reach the car shortly before 1500.
Many thanks to Harald for another great ski trip in this area.
