Mythic Places

Roncesvalles

Between St Jean Pied de Port and Pamplona, south of the Col de Ibaneta, on the pilgrim's road to Santiago de Compostella.

It is easy to reach and well known from the Chanson de Roland, a famous tale sunfg in all of Europe. The town consists mainly the Augustine monastery and the Chapel of St Roland, around 1217 work has begun on another chapel donated by the King of Navarre, so many workers will camp here. A few Basque houses are scattered around it. East of the town in a small valley, the actual battlefield is still full of the ghosts opf the dead, re-enacting the battle until they can be buried in consecrated earth. The Magi of Iturriaga visited the site and have left some impression with the prior of the Augustine canons, by the name of Bonifacius with their leraned yet strange ways. They have payed for mass and burial rites of a pile of bones from the battlefield. The Abbot is not too keen on anyone knowing this, for fear of people robbing the relicts.. The leading Hospitalller knight has bested in duel one of the magi's knights, a choleric German Templar named Rutger.

The horn of Roland can be heard during stormy nights in the mmountains near Roncevalles. The magi have discovered some magiuc weapons and have yet failed to claim the site.
