  • 2nd highest in Mexico
  • Climbed January 2. 1979

Information:

How to get there:
Popocatépetl is quite close to Mexico City, a short bus ride take you to a lodge below the glacier covering the main summit.
Route description: We basically left the lodge and hiked more or less straight up to the rim. The conditions were hard, blue ice part of the way, crampons and axe absolutely needed. The day before our climb a person died after slipping unable to self arrest. At the rim, one follows it a while counter clockwise to reach the highest point.
Comments:
This is a very nice place to enjoy the views on a clear day. The crater itself is also impressive. Since we climbed there has been an eruption, so much may have changed on the local scale.
