How to get there:
First drive to the small town named Umnugovi west of lake Khar-Us Nuur.
Next drive south, there are several tracks that serves the same area.
Route description:
First, head uphill towards north-west. As you reach the shallow col / shoulder,
do a traverse along easy terrain to get across
to the foot of the main hill.
There are numerous animal tracks that may be followed.
Finally, climb the hill using a route that mostly will stay on gras and vegetation while
avoiding the more rocky patches.

Here is a quick summary of peaks climbed in Mongolia August 2024.
We climbed Must Peak on August 5th. Unfortunately,
Adam was still feeling bad and decided to just stay at camp. He decided that he needed a
medical consultation and that the best place to do this for him would be Japan. After breakfast,
we therefore drove to Olgii where he could get a 24 bus back to Ulaan Baatar. All flights were
fully booked, thus flying would not be possible in the next 7 days.
After seeing Adam well on the bus we drove to a good trailhead for Altan Hohiy. First to the
small town Umnugovi, then with the help of our maps and satellite pictures, we directed our 2
Landcruisers to a very good trailhead.
Instead of camping as high as possible, the advice was
to rather camp next to a normad camp
and make friends with them. The next morning we would then drive as close to the mountain
as possible. The local normad was indeed very friendly
and invied us for an evening visit to
his hut.
On August 7. we had good weather
and breakfast at 0700. The hike would be about
5 kilometer each way with about 600 meter of elevation gain.
We drove all the way to a col at almost 2800m, the climb became even shorter than
anticipated. We started walking at 0740
and I arrived at the summit at 0855, so 1:15 up.
Nice day and good views all
around. In particular, we could see back to the
peak (Must) that we ascended 2 days ago. After
45 minutes on top, it
was time to return. Steven and I walked back down in only 35
minutes. Waiting, I walked over
and took some pictures
of nearby yaks. When our guide
arrived, he discovered that he had left his radio on the summit.
He therefore made a second ascent of the day, while Steven and I walked down to camp.
We had lunch, then sent our driver up to give our man a well deserved ride back down.
All well, radio recovered. We were ready to start driving back around 1330.
