How to get there:
This very nice peak is on the island of Flores in Indonesia.
The best starting point is the town of Bajawa. From this town do the
short drive along paved roads to the trailhhead at location
S8.86352, E120.972897, elevation near 1120 meter. A dirt road
forks right at this point.
Route description:
Walk the dirtroad downhill and across a small bridge. A road forks
right (uphill). Ignore this and continue straight. Look for a fairly small
trail forking right. This fork is at location S8.86483, E120.973038.
Follow this trail directly towards the mountain. The ascent is pretty
straightforward. You will
reach the crater rim near location
S8.77776, E120.956925, elevation about 2120 meter. The summit towers about
100 meter above you on the other side of the crater.
Behind, if you look outward, you will see another
very well shaped volcano, Ebulobo.
One may go either way,
a complete roundtrip (of the crater rim) is recommended. You will then
arrive on the summit marked with a concrete pillar.
Comments / Trip report:
We stayed in Bajawa, left around 0530 and arrived at the trailhead
shortly before 0600. The hike
was pleasant and the weather
gorgeous. I arrived at the crater rim in 1:40 and had a 20 minute break there.
Next, we continued to
the summit arriving at
0810. We noticed the summit sign saying 2245 meter, this seems too high,
GPS measurements indicated an elevation near 2230 meter. Peakbagger lists
2227 meter, pretty consistent with our GPS readings.
After 20 minutes, we descended the other way (counter clockwise) to complete
our crater rim
walk. A nice scree run further down eased the strain on my knees.
We were back by the trailheaad at 1035, our driver Roland waiting.
We next continued our drive to
Maumere, having a beach lunch break along the way.
