How to get there:
This mountain is located west on the Hardangervidda plateau, any hike to the summit will be
of considerable length. One may approach this peak from several directions, often a multi-day
trip may be preferable. This report outlines a pretty long single day trip.
This route starts from the farm Brattespe in Hardanger. From Bergen, drive E-16 to Voss. Continue
to Granvin and cross the Hardangerfjord on the nice bridge (this is Hwy. 7). Immediately on the other
side, take Hwy. 13 towards Odda. Drive approximately 35 kilometer towards Odda.
At location N60.21909, E006.60368, fork left and drive almost to the end of the road. Find parking
at or near location N60.20568, E006.60779, elevation about 140 meter. Try to ask the people living
there about parking in order to not get in anybodys way.
Route:
Locate the tractor road that heads uphill where the road to the farm ends. Follow this road uphill
until it ends near some farm buildings. This is at location
N60.20039, E006.63097, elevation about 735 meter.
Near the upper building, it is easy to locate a trail that continues uphill, initially passing
through some trees, heading left (as you face uphill).
This trail continues uphill and when it climbs above the treeline, it will gradually cross more
left, eventually merging with another trail near location N60.20613, E006.64150, elevation about
1080 meter.
From here, follow this trail uphill. After a bit, this trail passes some cabins in an area called
Austmannaholet. Continue along this trail as it climbs to a new aarea with cabins, then on the
south-west side of lake Vendevatnet, the elevaation is now near 1300 meter.
When the trail is west of the mountain called Honnburusti, leave the trail and head east more
or less directly towards Træshøgdi. One may do this traverse slightly south of
the highest point of Honnburusti, 1546m, but a descent into the small valley located between
the two mountains, is unavoidable.
Finally, ascend Træshøgdi.
The best line is likely to run a bit north of
the direct line to the summit. Follow natural gullys that head uphill in reasonable directions.
Comments:
This was my last peak among the 100 most prominent peaks in Hordaland. I had considered several
possible routes. I even had it on my schedule a few years ago on a ski trip in the beginning of May.
However, the snow was gone and the rivers going strongly without bridges, so that attempt got
cancelled before it really started. I finally decided that a long hike from the Hardanger fjord
was my best bet for a single day trip.
I left Bergen around 0445, knowing that I needed a long, full day. Started walking uphill at 0730.
It took one hour to reach the end of the tractor road, I continued with minimal stops and arrived
at the summit at 1245, so 5:15 to the summit. Nice views all around. The Folgefonna glacier being
the biggest eye catching feature. I started on my way back after 15 minutes. I knew it would take
almost the same time. The view across the fjord was
very nice as I approached the final descent,
looking down to the trailhead 1000 meter directly below.
I was back down at 1800, next almost 3 hours of driving, arriving home around 2100.
