How to get there:
Drive E-39 north from Bergen. Continue passing Romarheim, crossing
the mountains, then descending to Matre at the innermost
place in Masfjorden. Continue (uphill) along E-39, passing through
2 tunnels. Park at the first available spot on your right immediately
after you exit the second tunnel.
This is location N60.87980, E5.54159, elevation about 180 meter.
Route description:
The trail starts directly from this parking. A small trail heads uphill
into the forest. A sign saying Matre Nipa is located at the start.
Follow this trail uphill to the col named Litlefjellskaret.
Here, the trail turns more south and climbs to a small col close to
490 meter of elevation.
Finally, going more east, the trail ascends to the Matre Nipa ridge.
There are a few false summits, the first being
marked by a big cairn.
The trail runs to the east end of the summit ridge,
however, you pass the highest point
on the way there. The marked trail ends at a spot with
a good view back down to Matre. Comments:
I did this hike with my friend Eric.
The weather had been bad with (extreme weather) Gyda passing the previous
two days with rain as high as 1200 meter. With no prospects for good
skiing, we decided to climb two small peaks in Masfjorden.
We started out at 0930 and arrived on top after a leisurely walk, by
1040. Good views, we spent about 15 minutes on the top ridge before
returning back down at 1145.
Our next target was Hummel Nipa.
