Information:
How to get there:
Drive E-16 to Voss and continue towards Gudvangen. After Vinje, you will drive up a valley and
arrive at lake Oppheimsvatnet. Drive about 350 meter and locate a road that forks left.
Take this road about 1.4 kilometer, to the farm Bidne. Here, the road turns right
and continues about 300 meter to a new fork. Turn very sharply left and drive up the hill to
the farm Finne. Ask in the house for permission to park and where in order not to cause
any inconvenience. This is the trailhead, location N60.79766, E006.54840, elevation about 510 meter.
Note: If Svolefjellet is your only goal, then alternate and better trailheads exist.
Referring to the map, look for good starting locations near Ulvund or Nesheim
with access from the road between Vinje and Myrkdalen.
Route description:
This route decribes how to climb Svolefjellet as a sidetrip when visiting the higher
Tverrfjellet, located east of Svolefjellet.
From the Tverrfjellet summit, head southwest until you have descended to elevation 1030m, turn
north-west and ski down the gentle slope towards the lake Stora Vasstjørni. Ascend the
ridge west of the lake, then turn gradually south and climb the broad, gentle ridge to gain the
summit. Return the same way until the 1030m location, continue from there towards the minor
summit Så:ta (1102m), before descending back down to the trailhead.
Comments:
This was a Bergen mountaineering group trip. Due to the onset of the (school) winter vacation,
few people had signed up.
Thus, only Fredrik and John came along.
We started from Bergen around 0830,
the start of skiing subswquently at 1045.
The weather was ok, frequent changes
between some visibility,
even a bit of sunshine, and fog.
A fair bit of new snow on the mountain, we made
a new ski track almost all the way.
We arrived at the Tverrfjellet summit around 1250, a short stop.
We proceeded to Svolefjellet, arriving there at 1405.
Skiing back was easy, we stopped at Såta and signed the summit register around 1530,
then a long downhill with some desperate snowplow at the very end, back at Finne just before 1600.
