How to get there:
There are two trailheads. one may start at Brandset, parking at location 60.77834, 6.69971, elevation
about 570 meter. This trailhead has a fairly gentle slope, often good skiing. A disadvantage
is that one arrives at the main summit ridge about 1.5 kilometer east of the summit.
An alternative start is from lake Oppheimsvatn, parking at location 60.79129, 6.60650.
This start is at elevation 365 meter. This route is shorter, with more vertical gain.
An advantage is that the route climbs pretty directly to the highest summit.
Route description:
The route from Brandset climbs gently in pretty open forest, then slightly steeper up to
the east end of the main summit crest. There are several variations. Finally, along the
crest to the summit.
The route from Oppheimsvatnet starts up a forest road. After a while, this forest road
has a fork. It is important to follow the left branch that crosses the nearby river.
After a few more zig-zag turns, this road levels off with some open terrain on the right
(down slope) side. Leave the road here and ascend a pretty steep hill side with larger
birch trees. On top of this hill, climb the next slope by staying slightly left. You will
arrive at a more flat section with sparse vegetation and
see the final open slope above.
Ascend this to the main crest. From here, head right to locate the summit with a pretty
big cairn.
If skiing, the return downhill may follow your uphill track or you may run directly
down the big gully (small valley) that starts fairly close to the summit. Check for
avalanche conditions as the (side) slopes of this big gully are fairly steep.
Comments:
I did this trip as guide with the Bergen Mountaineering DNT group. 18 people
signed up and I had Halvor and Lars Robert come along as co-trip guides.
We started around 1030. About 25 cm of fresh powder had fallen the day before,
so very nice conditions. There was almost no wind and some sunshine. We made the
summit around 1300, a break was needed to change the gear as well as enjoying
the good views. We were back down by the cars shortly after 1400. 10 people
skied down the gully,
while 11 skied back down more or less the same route as ascent.
