How to get there:
A forest road
climbs high on this mountain.
We parked
a Subaru at locaation N49.04844, W124.65720, elevaation near
1120 meter. We had alreády passed several water bars that
were borderline deep for this car. A proper 4WD may drive
a bit higher.
See this summary of climbs in BC, August 2022.
Route description:
Follow the road as it makes several switch-backs before
getting to a spot directly below the subsidiary summit
at location N49.05131, W124.64942.
Ascend across a cut-block (are where logging has been done),
in order to follow the ridge. There are some markers along this
route. There are 2 options. One may follow the ridge all the way
to a local summit, then descend steeply to the saddle between
this peak and Mount Spencer, OR,
one can do a traverse (well before the local summit) on the
left side of the ridge. This traverse is flagged with some red
markers.
When you reach the saddle between the two tops, continue mostly
along the highest ridge (some bushwack), then a short scramble (easy)
before you arrive on the summit.
A summit register is placed in a small hole below some rocks, near
the summit.
Comments:
This would be our first ultra on Vancouver Island.
The forest road had water bars, some quite deep for our Subaru.
We decided to park just before a steepish left curve.
Ascending, we discovered the flagged traverse, but Adam did
not like it (still a bit affected by Covid?). We therefore ascended
the small peak, only to discover a pretty nasty descent to the saddle.
We were quite happy when
reaching this summit,
what had looked
as quite an easy ascent had actually turned out quite cumbersome.
