How to get there:
Locate the small town of Stranda at Sunnmøre. The next village on the
south side of Norddalsfjorden, further east, is Eidsdalen. From Stranda, you
first need a ferry to the north side (Liabygda), then drive 10 kilometer east
and take a second ferry across the fjord to the south side again. From Eidsdalen,
drive towards Geiranger. After 6.1 kilometer, fork right (this is in a sharp left
curve on the main Hwy.). The sign here reads Kilsti. Drive another 3.8 kilometer
along this road. Here, the road is made wider to allow for parking. Park here,
this is the trailhead. Location N62.25276, E007.14520, elevation about 500 meter.
Route description:
Ski uphill (east), then descend slightly (right) and continue to reach the south
side of lake Kilstivatnet (538m). Continue north-west along the lake until you
locate a small creek that enters the lake, this is near the end of the lake, but
before a few cabins. Ascend here, first on the right hand side of the creek.
The birch forest is sparse enough for skiing, both uphill and back downhill.
As you clear the vegetation, gradually turn more left (south) and climb along
the easiest slope towards a shallow saddle having some sort of antenna (or rather
a reflector?) on a small rocky point to your left. Once you reach this area, turn more
right and ascend a long, but easy slope to the summit.
This mountain/route is quite nice and suitable for an easy ascent on skis.
Comments:
I arrived pretty late after a nice drive from Stryn. I parked at the trailhead parking
and slept there. The next morning, I left at 0730 after a small breakfast in the car.
The weather was nice and the skiing was easy. I used my randonnee skis, thinking that this
would give me a good run back down. After a couple of short breaks enjoying the great
scenery as it unfolded, I reached the summit at 0955. A nice big cairn with a summit¨register.
Somebody had been here on Saturday (the day before) and I had skied in their uphill ski track
all the way. I stayed around for 20 minutes until 1015. Skiing back down was just as
good as I had hoped for. I stopped down by the lake and attached the skins since the last
part had two small uphill sections. I was back at my car at 1115, so one hour for the
return.
