How to get there:
El Mela is a somewhat mysterious mopuntain. It is among the top 110 mountains
in the world wrt. prominence, yet essentially no information available. With
considerable effort I finally succeeded to get in touch with Leonardo Guzman.
He had walked extensively in this mountain, but could not provide much concrete information.
The closest town that may be used as a starting point, is Anillaco. Proceed south from here
to locate a trailhead in Aqua Blanca, turn right near S28.96515, W67.00037. Drive a short distance
on this small road to location S28.96471, W67.01336, elevation about 1640 meter. The trail starts here.
Route description:
Follow the good trail as it ascends the mountain. You quickly gain about 900 meter as the trail turns
left and traverses above a small valley, eventually crossing it (small creek), then shortly reaches
a shepherds hut, stone shelter with a solar panel! This is location S28.97098, W067.05633, elevation
about 2560 meter.
The trail now descends slightly to a bigger creek in a small canyon. Good water supply here.
