How to get there:
Signed trailhead parking on your left.
This location is near N34.29, W117.21, elevation about 1460 meter.
Route::
There are quite a few trails in the lower part of this area, many of them
have the potential of leading you off-route. It may be a good ideaa to download
a GPS track from for example Peakbagger.
Initially, head north, then follow the trail that runs west in a pretty distinct
little vally south of peak 5078.
From there, the route should be pretty clear, with small variations. There are
small cairns showing at least a possible way. The route climbs north to the col
west of peak 5078, then climbs more steeply west from a location west of peak
5223. Finally, a small descent in order to cross a flat area before
the final ascent.
The top consists of some huge boulders, walk up into the middle, proceed
to climb the rocks at the far end,
there is a relatively easy scramble directly
to the highest point. Comments:
I did this climb together with Jeff Hittinger, from LLNL.
I was attending a workshop organized by IPAM (UCLA), staying at the nice
UCLA lodge located at Lake Arrowhead. We had the afternoon free and I suggested
to Jeff that we go hiking, an idea he immediately embraced.
We left shortly after 1300 and started hiking just before 1330. I first took a wrong
trail, that led us north towards peak 5223. Realizing the mistake, I decided to
backtrack and get back onto the proper route without any cross country adventure.
We arrived on top around 1500 and spent about 15 minutes
enjoying the good view.
The descent was straightforward, back at the car around 1600.
Many thanks to Jeff for good company!
