How to get there:
Locate the town Stranda in Møre og Romsdal. There is a ferry connecting across the fjord. On the other side, drive towards Ålesund, that is, first towards the small community called Stordal. About 5 km before Stordal, another valley forks right and the road going that way has signs for a ski area called Øverøyane.. Follow this sign, you will locate the ski area on your left hand side. Continue along the ru until it ends in a large (pay) parking area. Pay at a machine (NOK 50 in 2018), then park. This location is at N62.42468, E007.22316, elevation about 390 meter.
Route description:
There is a groomed track from the parking (continue a short bit along the road passing a closed gate), all the way into Jolbotnen. Leave (right) the groomed trail around location N62.46053, E007.22024, elevation about 570 meter. Continue up the slope directly ahead (north), then traverse right near elevation 800 meter. Continue into the upper bowl, then ascend to the col between Storbua and Kvasstinden or slightly more direct, on the Storbua (right) side of the col.
From here, follow the ridge, then ascend about 100 vertical meter on a somewhat steeper slope before reaching more gentle terrain and the large summit plateau. The highest point with a cairn and a nice visitors guestbook is located near the east tip of the plateau, that is, bear left. Be aware that there may be dangerous cornices along the steep sides of this summit plateau.
Comments:
Eric and I skied this mountain the day after we climbed Høgstolen. The weather was still just gorgeous. We started at 0915 and followed the nice groomed ski track all the way to the uphill really starts in Jolbotnen. The skiing was nice as we gradually climbed and the scenery steadily improved with new peaks appearing behind the closest ones. Again, a short rest was called for, some convenient rocks and a nice view back.
We made the summit at 1315, so 4 hours at a leisurly pace. The summit register showed us to be number 3 and 4 for 2018, while a total of only 8 people had signed in for all of 2017. Surprisingly few, given the easy access and the very large community of mountain cabins near the end of the road.
We stayed around the summit for 30 minutes, then skied back to the car in 1:15, arriving at 1500. The skiing down was nice, we took a slightly steeper and more direct route in the lower part, joining our route of ascent down in Jolbotnen.
