How to get there:
From Bergen, drive E-39 north to Romarheim. There is a signed road
going right. This road serves Modalen, but is also a cross road
towards E-16 and Dale.
Continue up the Modalen valley (Do NOT enter the long tunnel that connects to Eksingedalen).
After somewhat more than 10 kilometer, locate the signed road that forks right. The sign
reads Nygaard 6km. Drive this road, keep left and find parking near Steinavatnet, the road ends
here in winter, there is a nice parking area.
This is the tailhead, location N60.89937, E006.01917, elevation
about 490 meter.
Route:
Ski directly up the hill (left when looking up the valley), you will see and pass a couple
of vacation huts. Follow the valley uphill as it curves left. You will ascend a short, somewhat
steeper slope, higher up turn more right and continue towards the highest point. The summit has
a sign, a summit register and a small cairn. There are good views down and up Modalen.
Comments:
I did this trip with my friend Eric. The forecast called for good, sunny weather. It had
snowed the previous day, so the conditions were promising.
We left Bergen around 0815 and started skiing at 1025. There were tracks from the winter break
just a week ago. We followed a pretty steep track all the way up, reaching the summit
by 1125, so one hour. Nice views and good weather invited for a short break on top.
Finally, leaving at 1145, we had a nice run back down with good snow, arriving back
at the car in only 10 minutes.
