How to get there:
A good point of reference is the small community Hosteland, located north of Masfjorden. To get there from Bergen, drive north on E-39. Just before E-39 enters the 4 km long Eikefet tunnel, there is a choice of route. Forking left onto Hwy. 570, then connect from Masfjordneset to Duesund by (cable) ferry. This is a scenic option. Alternatively, continue on E-39 passing the two fingers of Masfjorden, then an uphill tunnel to the intersection with Hwy. 571. Turn left here, descending on the north side of Masfjorden to meet Hwy. 570 near Hosteland.
The third, and perhaps best way, is to use the ferry from Leirvåg. Turn left in the very first traffic circle in Knarvik (immediately after the bridge), follow Hwy. 57 to Leirvåg. This ferry leaves 15 minutes past the hour. The return ferry leaves Sløvågen 15 minutes before the hour. The crossing takes 20 minutes. From Sløvågen, you have 14 kilometer to reach Hosteland.
From Hosteland, take Hwy. 570 east for about 2.1 kilometer. Make a left onto the small road serving Molland. Drive as high as possible, it may be best to ask the locals about parking. I drove to the very top of the road, location N60.84998, E5.30105, elevation about 73 meter.
Route description:
Continue along the forest road. Leave the road going left at about N60.8560, E5.3009, elevation near 115 meter. Follow tracks made by animals uphill, look for a pretty natural passage up the steepest part above you. This location is at the lower end of a fairly clear, but shallow gully that runs down the hillside above the short, steep part. Once up here, the rest of the ascent is pretty easy. Just continue uphill, first along the gully, later more along the east ridge of the hill.
Comments:
I arrived at the summit around 1540. It had been a long day and by the time I would be back down at the car, I should certainly start the 2 hour trip back home. This peak had a nice little cairn and good views across to its neighbor Snaufjellet that I visited yesterday. This was my last peak (peak no. 7) climbed on this day. I then returned to Bergen. Two quite active days with 14 (low) Masfjorden summits.
