Notes
The Top Secret Groom Lake Air Force Base (aka Area 51 or Dreamland) is 75 Miles Northwest
of Las Vegas. Previously the US Government denied its existance. The base was originally built in
the 50s for Lockheed's Military aircraft prototyping applications, since then it has grown exponentially. It has been used in this way for Stealth technologies such as the F-117, SR-71
and U2.
This Highly accurate version is based on recent 1 Meter (3.2 Ft) Satellite Imagery and Data
(aquired from the Russian Aviation and Space Agency), It features a complex layout including a
32 acre munitions storage facility, Bunkers, Tanks, Burn pits, Large Runways (32L extends onto
the dried up lake totaling 25,300ft).
Also includes Lockheed's large hangars as well as Hangar 18, capable of housing aircraft with a
wingspan of up to 235 feet. Area 51 is also known to house TEMPEST certified Intelligence
and cryptological vaults (Buildings capable of suppressing Electro Magnetic Radiation).
The base has also been thought of as a Government storage facility for UFOs! - Whilst this maybe
unlikely the shear scale and Technology in-use at the base is truly amazing.
In this FS2002 Version emphasis has been placed on Layout, Positioning and correct sizing of
Aprons, Taxiway networks and buildings, so coloring and appearance of the buildings may differ
from the actual base.
This first version excludes roads leading into the base, recreational facilities (such as baseball
Diamond and Tennis court) and a few other buildings present on the real site.
Outline of Main Facilities
(Refer to the LayoutDiagram)
Tank
Farm (Fuel)
Storage tanks capable of holding 1,320,000 gallons of JP-7 fuel (20
Acre site).
Tank Farm (Water)
Storage tanks that serve the base with a 30-36,000 gallon capacity.
Asphalt Mixing Facilities
A preparation and mixing Plant to support the construction of the
new
runway (33R). At least 474,000 yards or 97 acres of asphalt was laid for
both
the new runway and taxiways.
Lockheed Hangars
There is almost 300,000 square feet of hangar space at Groom Lake
(in total).
These ones are used by Lockheed.
Recieving Area
Securing the incoming Road that serves the base is achieved by this
area, which
handles supplies to the base. Also provides a large storage facility.
Dormitories
These rows of buildings House the Personell.
Munitions Facilities and Bunkers
Thought to be part of the Stealth Fighter Weapons programme provides
weapons storage and testing facilities. (32 Acre site)
Burn Pit
Toxic waste burn pit, used to dispose of Chemicals and Waste.
Extended Runway
This older feature of the base extends onto the dried-up lake bed of
Groom Lake.
Runway 33L/15R
This is the older Runway that is extended onto the lake (see above).
Runway 33R/15L
This is the newly built Runway.
Hangar 18
Capable of housing aircraft with a wingspan of up to 235 feet.
Nav Aids (Navigational
Aids)
Please note all NavAids for this Air Force Base are fictional, and
it is highly likely that they are using UHF (Ultra High Frequency) Band
(in GHz) as opposed to VHF (Very High Frequency) Band (in MHz) as it has
a far shorter range and higher signal quality. They may also encrypt the
signal. They may even use other technology. MS Flight Simulator only
supports VHF Com/Nav Radios. (See article on NavAids at the website).
ILS Runway 33L/15R X33L = 110.10 ; X15R = 110.20 (16Km Range) with DME
ILS Runway 33R/15L X33R = 110.30 ; X15L = 110.40 (16Km Range) with DME
VOR VX = 108.80 (20Km Range) (DME and VORTAC)
Installation
Extract all the files in the Zip Archive to a temporary folder.
Copy all of the *.bgl files into your Flight Simulator "Scenery" Folder
i.e "C:\Programs\FS2002\Scenery" (if you installed flight simulator in
"C:\Programs\FS2002\").
There is another Zip Archive called Textures contained within the Main
Zip file. Extract these files to your Flight Simulator "Texture" Folder.
i.e "C:\Programs\FS2002\Texture" (if you installed flight simulator in
"C:\Programs\FS2002\").
Files that should reside in [Flight Simulator Program Directory]\Scenery
*.BGL
(All the files in the Main Zip Archive)
Files that should reside in [Flight Simulator Program Directory]\Texture
*.R8
*.OAV
*.?AF
(All the files in the Texture Zip Archive)
TroubleShooting
Problem: Some objects appear to be plain/blank
Solution: Make sure you have copied all the files in the Texture.Zip Archive
to your [Flight Simulator Program Directory]\Texture Folder
Problem: Scenery does not show up in the Airport list
Solution: Click on the "Add-on Scenery" tab if it still does not show up
make sure you have copied all the *.BGL files from the Main Zip
Archive to your [Flight Simulator Program Directory]\Scenery Folder as
described above.
