Every time I open the material navigator for an object...it crashes my GMAX application. Any guesses on why this is happening? Does the program need a patch?

Regards,
Owen

I found that it crashes in windows 98, but when I use it in 2000 it does not crash.

I used to be able to open it without any problems. Now it crashes every time. On Windows 2000 here.

I've found that the more work I put into my project (A Cessna A-37 Dragonfly for FS2002) the more unstable GMAX becomes. I can't use the materials navigator at all. It'll work fine if I start a fresh project, however.

I hope Discreet is working on a patch!

same here. First time I ever opened it, it crashed. Never been able to use it at all.
I did some experimenting. It seems it crashes as soon as there is anything to navigate. If the list of available materials is empty, it works normally.
If there is ANYTHING in there, it crashes immediately. Anything that is there is shown only as a black square too, so it looks like the rendering code.
I tried using all drivers (Heidi, DX, OpenGL), same result every single time.

I guess it's back to FSDS for FS2002 aircraft...

I had the same problem, but am unsure as how I fixed it. It also worked for a while before these problems cropped up.

Reinstalling didnt work.

I both re-downloaded the installer, and then installed it from root ( C: ). The file size was the same on both dl'ed files, so I am assuming it has something to do with from where you install it. Maybe the installer freaks on directories with spaces.

To sum up, try moving the installer exe to root and installing.

I have FS2002 installed in a directory without spaces (installed into the root of its own harddisk ), so there is no problem with spaces in directorynames.
Installed GMax into the root of the same drive, so no spaces there either.

From the screen, it looks like the rendering of the texture previews goes terribly wrong, causing the screenbuffer to become corrupted.
If so, it might be related to hardware or driver versions.
My card is not the newest (GeForce 256), but I do run the latest non-beta drivers I could find on nVidia's site. RAM is no problem either, 1GB main + 32MB video should do the trick nicely

Personally, I think it is. As I said, the navigator loads, but crashes as soon as there are any texture previews to be displayed. The previews show up as black squares (or black squares with some white specks), which indicates failure to paint the bitmap.

I get the EXACT same thing with a Geforce2 MX 400, so if those without a Geforece card are not getting it, i think it would have to do with the drivers for the Nvidia chips.

I was using a student version of 3ds max (when i was a student) and had no probs...*shrugs*

says "MAT file". Not linked to an application...
Changing cards from GeForce256 to GeForce 2Ti didn't solve it either (was unlikely as the drivers and general APIs for the hardware are the same).

i have the SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!! i got rid of the material naviggator bug of my gmax!!!!

How did i do it u ask????? well u go into broswer and then into the folder where they are kept, gmax/matlibs , then right click, go down to properties and look under "type" at the top, ok that is the program that is stuffing up ur material navigator!!... i think....
ok from here on u have differnt choices depending on what u want to do.....

1. IF u dont want that program any more the just un-install it.

2.(this is what i did) If u want to keep the program but want the material nav to work as well. copy ur program folder and EVERYTHING in it then paste some where else, then uninsatll the orignal program and PRESTO!! the mat. nav. works and u still have ur program... u just have to go into the folder to start it..... its quite risky but its what i wanteed to do.

3....... there has to be an easy way to do this.

WARNING!!!! this is how I!! fixed it, and im NOT a profesional!! So do not blame me if this stuffs up ur computer!! Do this at your own risk!!!!

Which render drivers are you guys using when this problem happens ?

I've been using GMAX since September on my Win-ME (256Mb memory). I've been using as a test, the Heidi rendering drivers since October. My GMAX rarely crashes but when it does, I either have a popup telling it will closed down and allowing me to save a backup, or it simply closes down without warnings.

Had the same problem after I passed the Dash8_100 trough Gmax, a heavy project. I'm running gmax in windows MP. Restarting GMAX, restarting Windows, no way. The next day all went normal again....
for no apparent reason.
