Languages

Medieval languages vary widely from area to area - sometimes even from village to village - and also vary according to social class. They can best be understood as families of languages. So, while speakers from different areas may be able to roughly understand each other, both may use words and phrases which the other does not understand, and there is a clear difference in accent.

French is the most widely used language in Christendom. Norman French is used by the aristocracy of Englad and southern Italy, and a version called High French, or Francia, is the language of commerce and diplomacy. (See news French for the various dialects) As this MUSH is set in France it would be wise to buy a good score in one of the many dialects if this language.

Languages of the Spanish, german and Italian families may also occur, as may Gaelic (the Breton language of Brittany), Portugues, English, and Romansh (similiar to latin and spoken by the people we now call the Swiss). Just as Hebew is a single unchanging language among the Jewish communities throughout Europe, Arbaic is the single language of the Moors, and varies very little throughout the Arab world, from Jerusalem to Spain.

Of special note to the people of France is the language of Provencal, this language is a cross between French and Spanish, and is a language of the highest literary distinction. (See news French)

Latin is the language of the Church and of scholars throughout Western Europe. Similarly it is the language of the Order of Hermes, though there are several major differences in usuage. It would be worthwhile for any associated witha covenant to pick up a smattering of this tongue.

It is expected that all players will roleplay the use of language, how you do this is up to you, and could include anything from posing your speaking a certain language to developing code for this. You shouldn't understand a language you don't speak and should act accordingly. In addition one should be faithful to your level of understanding.
