INF380 Spring 2006 - Exercise 1

From Chapter 4 in Eidhammer, Jonassen and Taylor (p. 97):
Exercises 2, 4, 5, 8, 10.

Remarks to some of the exercises:

Ex. 5:
Trying out all the trees can be tedious. Spend as much time as you like, the important thing is to understand the idea.
Ex. 8:
In a): For how many cases must you check Eq. 4.11? Again: The important thing is to understand the process, not to do a computer's work...

In b): You could use UPGMA, or just try to find a tree by informal reasoning.

Note: Exercises 9 and 11 are likely to be included in the compulsory assignment. Of course, nothing prevents you from having a look at them already. In particular, it is a good idea to have a brief look at the CLUSTALW program.

We can discuss the exercises on Monday, 30 January, but you should look at them yourself first.

Good luck!
