Master Thesis (masteroppgåve)

Individual coach from VisGroup, 60 ECTS

The Master thesis in Visualization is a research-related piece of practical work. It is the fundamental part of the UiB Master study programme in informatics with focus on visualization (MAMN-INFVI).

Introduction

The master's thesis is research-based work. This requires that the student has obtained substantial knowledge within visualization. In agreement with his/her academic supervisor, the student will choose a master's thesis (60 ECTS credits) and make a progression plan containing important milestones for the project.

Objective(s)

The Master thesis in Visualization is a research-related piece of practical work. This requires that the student has obtained substantial knowledge within the research field of visualization when starting.

During the 1st semester the student establishes contact with a personal coach (lecturer). Together with this coach a subject for the thesis is specified and a schedule is made with an outline of courses and milestones in the thesis work. The setup of the Master thesis is a project with workload equivalent to 60 study points. The project (the normal 60 ETCS one) has to be delivered within the two years time frame of the Master study.

Semester(s)

The Master thesis project can be started in fall and in spring semester, and is expected to proceed over three semesters.

Structure of the thesis project

The Master thesis project has three stages. The first part is literature research (30%), i.e., the familiarization with the research topic, state-of-the-art review, and a detailed design of the planned thesis also including a time schedule.

The second part is the software implementation (50%), i.e., the core part of the thesis where the hypothesis, the scientific aspect is experimentally validated.

The last part is the dissemination (20%) of the scientific outcome in the written form (the actual writing of the master thesis).

MAMN-INFVI Context

The Master thesis project is the fundamental part of the UiB Master study programme in informatics with focus on visualization (MAMN-INFVI).  It should be started in the second semester of the Master studies, and should be completed within three semesters.

Embedding of INF219 in MAMN-INFVI

Evaluation

After the master thesis is handed in and approved, the study program finishes with an oral master's degree examination. The examination consists of

a public presentation (ca. 30 minutes) where the student presents his/her master thesis. The censor and the thesis supervisor are attending this presentation.

The presentation is followed by an oral examination / discussion with the censor and thesis supervisor.

Before the presentation the master thesis is evaluated. The presentation and the successive oral examination / discussion are also included in the final evaluation and grade.

Credits

Students get 60 ECTS (when successfully finishing, of course).
