4 Papers at IEEE VIS

Several papers from our group have been accepted at IEEE VIS 2016. Our PhD students Sergej Stoppel, Andreas Lind, and Ivan Kolesar will each be presenting their work in Baltimore. A further paper first-authored by Noeska Smit, who is now also part of our group, is the result of a collaboration between institutions in Delft, Leiden, Koblenz, and Bergen.

Accepted FRIPRO Proposal

My project proposal to the FRIPRO program of the Research Council of Norway has been granted. The scheme is quite competitive: one deadline per year with an overall success rate of only 12.5% (11% in the Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Technology track where I applied). The new project will start up in 2016 and focus on developing new approaches for navigating the space of visualizations.

VIS 2015 Tutorial on Rejuvinated Medical Visualization

Steffen Oeltze-Jafra, Helwig Hauser, Anders Ynnerman, and myself presented a tutorial on current hot topics and challenges in medical visualization at the IEEE VIS conference in Chicago. Kai Lawonn also wrote a nice report about the tutorial for medvis.org.

VIS 2015 Workshop on visualization for Decision Making Under Uncertainty

We organized a workshop on the topic of visualization for decision making and the role of uncertainty. We had two excellent invited speakers (Chris Johnson and George Craig) the program included many interesting paper presentations. I was part of a panel where we presented and discussed our views on the grand challenges in visualizing uncertainty.

MICCAI 2015 Tutorial on Advanced Medical Visualization

This full-day tutorial at the MICCAI conference in Munich covered a wide spectrum of subjects in medical visualization presented by several well-known international speakers. I covered the visualization of 4D ultrasound data.

Best Paper Award at SCCG 2015

Our paper on Automatized Summarization of Multiplayer Games received the Best Paper Award at the 31st Spring Conference on Computer Graphics.

About [ Curriculum Vitae ]

Stefan Bruckner is professor in visualization at the Department of Informatics of the University of Bergen, Norway. He received his master's degree in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology (VUT), Austria in 2004 and his Ph.D. in 2008 from the same university. He was awarded the habilitation (venia docendi) in Practical Computer Science in 2012. From 2008 to 2013, he was an assistant professor at the Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms at VUT. His research interests include interactive visualization techniques for biomedical data, illustrative visualization, volume rendering, and visual data exploration. His research has received publication awards at several international events including VCBM 2014 (best paper and honorable mention), SCCG 2013 (best paper), EuroVis 2010 (best paper), and Eurographics 2007 (3rd best paper). He won the Karl-Heinz-Höhne Award for Medical Visualization in 2006 and received the 2011 Eurographics Young Researcher Award. He was paper co-chair of EuroVis 2012 and currently serves on the editorial board of Computers & Graphics. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, ACM SIGGRAPH, and Eurographics.

Research

I investigate methods for gaining insight into complex data to further scientific understanding and discovery, medical diagnosis and treatment, and engineering, as well as techniques for communicating these findings to the public. Building on these foundations, my current interests include the development of novel approaches for the scientific inquiry of large-scale heterogeneous data spaces with a particular focus on the visual analysis of spatial data.

Teaching

Computer Graphics (INF251)

Fall Semester: This course gives an introduction to the field of computer graphics in practise and theory. It covers central topics such as modeling, data structures, real-time rendering, and global illumination.

Visualization (INF252)

Spring Semester: This is the central course for the UiB master study programme in informatics with focus on visualization. It broadly covers important areas in the field including visual design and aspects of human perception. Topics include information visualization, flow visualization, volume visualization, and visual analytics.
