How to get there:
From Harare, it takes 4-5 hours depending on traffic to drive to the National Park.
The park office is located at coordinates S18.2869, E032.72526. You should reserve
accommodation and tell that you need the (mandatory) guide in advance. This is easily done by contacting
Juliet Banda Moses with email jbanda@zimparks.org.zw. Alternatively, contact Stephen Mashamba at the National Park administration,
email: smashamba@zimparks.org.zw, and he will provide a direct contact person.
The accommodation provided is nice, but based on self cooking, a full kitchen is available as well as a living room, bedrooms etc.
From the National Park office, one must drive to the trailhead. This road is rough and high clearance is essential. The drive
will take 30 minutes and the guide will ride in your vehicle. The trailhead parking is directly at the base of the mountain,
location S18.28400, E032.82721, elevation about 2135 meter.
Route description:
There is a clear and unique trail starting at the trailhead and ending at the summit.
It first ascends to the main crest, then
follows this more horizontally to reach a final small ascent to the highest point.
Comments:
We had a flight from Lesotho via Johannesburg to Harare in the morning. There, we checked out a 4WD rental vehicle (expensive)
and drove to the National Park,
arriving around 2100. The park had been informed about our late arrival and kept the office open
until we had checked in.
The next morning, after breakfast, we drove to the trailhead arriving there around
0740. The hike to the summit took 55 minutes. A nice place with good views. We relaxed there for more than 30 minutes
before descending in about 60 minutes. A short trip followed by a break back at the National Park, then checking out and
driving back to Harare where we had booked a hotel. The next morning we would fly via Johannesburg to Blantyre in Malawi.
