How to get there:
The best starting point is the DNT self serve hut Pyttbua. The best trailhead for Pyttbua is
Tunga, loc. N62.24261, E7.94860, elevation about 800 meter. This parking is reached using a toll
road, payment (NOK 90 in 2023) via www.youpark.no after you exit. You get to this road from Hwy. E-136 between
Dombås and Åndalsnes. Exit this road about 5 kilometer north-west of Bjorli at location N62.2842, E8.14145.
Continue to the toll road, automatic camera, then onwards to the parking at the end of the road accessible by
the public at location N62.2426, E7.9485, elevation near 800 meter.
Route description: To Pyttbua:
Cross the bridge and follow the road for about one kilometer. The trail to Pyttbua exits left, well signed, near
elevation 860 meter. Follow this well marked trail keeping the river on your left side, for about 8 kilometer to
the Pyttbua hut. To Pyttegga:
Take the signed trail east, cross the river on a nice bridge, then continue directly towards the
mountain. The trail sort of runs out near location N62.21045, E007.77004, elevation 1300 meter. However,
cairns show a reasonable way onwards. The route generally stays a bit on your left hand side of the main crest
in the beginning. The final part of the hike runs up along the east summit ridge. Comments:
I walked across the Høgtunge mountain from the DNT hut Vakkerstøylen, the day before.
This was in fact a bit involved as you must cross the lake Ulvådalsvatnet by rowing a small boat. Moreover, for this
to work (at any time) there must always be a boat at both sides of the lake. This means that one must row across the
lake three times. On top of this, the two boats were half-filled by water. Obviously, there had been massive rain
since last time anybody had used this crossing. A small hand bailer was located and then the work started. In hindsight,
I should have walked back up to Vakkerstølen and borrowed a bucket. Anyway, after 2 hours of work by 1000, I was ready to
start the proper walk. I had planned to visit the summit Høgtunga along the way. Unfortunately, the weather
turned really bad with strong wind, low temperatures and massive rain. I was soon totally soaked and cold, the peak
got cancelled and my only priority was to keep walking in order to reach the hut Pyttbua as quickly as possible.
Once there, I needed to dry everything. I was the only visitor, so pretty easy to spread all the wet stuff on
chairs in a circle around the oven. The hut warmed up and life was again pretty good.
The next day, the weather looked promising. I decided to give Pyttegga a try. I left at 0700, just as the
sun started to hit the neighbor peak Karitinden. A nice and easy to follow trial got me pretty high
on the lower part of the ridge. Cairns showed a pretty good way to hike onwards. Eventually, the talus covered by
a thin layer of new snow, dominated the terrain. I got onto the main crest and ascended along a pretty
reasonable route to the summit, arriving there at 0950.
Good views all around. I stepped on top of the (low) cairn that had been built to reach exactly 2000 meter.
