Information:

How to get there:

The best access is from the railway station Upsete. This is about 2 hours by local train from Bergen.
Route description:
If in winter, carefully cross the railroad tracks and descend into the basin below. If in spring, the river below may be open, then proceed towards the tunnel (towards Myrdal). There is a bridge there. Check carefully for trains before crossing the tracks.
From the basin, just ski directly up the big, broad (NW) ridge coming down from the mountain. The terrain is steepest near the beginning, slightly better slopes by staying a bit right in the beginning.
The local people tell me that they prefer skiing up the valley Gangdalen, immediately north of the mountain. From this valley one then needs to turn south and ascend the mountain.
Comments / Trip report:
I had agreed to make a Saturday trip with Harald. The forecast was super. We agreed to visit Øykjafonn and Skipanuten. I drove to Arna and took the 0715 train from there, while Harald came with the train from Bergen.
We started skiing at 0930, and made good progress. Summit in about 2 hours. After a brief stop we continued to Skipanuten on the south side We came back the same way and thus climbed Øykjafonn twice on this day. The ski back down to Upsete was very nice indeed. Arriving back around 1530, about 30 minutes before the train departure to Bergen.
It was nice and sunny, 2 guys that had been on our train in the morning, also climbed the peak, we met them at the cairn on our second ascent. While we waited for the train, these two also came back in time. They offered me a can of beer that had been carried to the summit. Very nice indeed.
