How to get there:
This Ribu peak is located quite close to the capital, Alger. Take the main east-west freeway going west, exit and drive south to Col de Mouzaia, located at N36.37338, E002.70896. A smaller dirt road runs east from this col. It is in good condition (2024), no problem for a normal passenger car. Drive about one kilometer to a small col with good parking. This is the trailhead, location N36.37655, E002.71551. elevation near 1380 meter.
Route description:
A nice trail starts out east (stay left). This trail winds around to the east side of the peak, then turns back (stay left at trail forks), ascending the peak. A considerable short-cut can be made by taking a smaller, steepish trail that forks left at location N36.37358, E002.71898. Follow the more or less obvious path uphill to the summit.
Comments:
This was our last day in Algeria and this peak located fairly close to our hotel in Alger was an obvious target. Our driver picked us up at (El Ghanami) hotel around 0830 and after some pretty normal traffic delays, we arrived at the Col de Mouzaia around 1100. The driver did not like the look of the dirt road (only an initial issue) and sort of insisted on parking at this main col.
I left together with my friend Per around 1115. We soon reached the smaller col and noticed the promising looking trail. However, Per was not feeling good for a hike of somewhat unknown length and quality. I had absolutely no prior information about access to this peak. We therefore turned around and walked back to the car. I noticed an alternative beginning to the road avoiding the erosion that scared my driver, thus demanded that he drive up to the proper trail head.
I started out again around 1205. It was fog and very limited visibility. I decided to stick to the trail, it seemed very likely indeed that it would lead me to the summit. As it turned out, a rather long loop to the east before finally turning towards the peak. I arrived at the summit 1240. A slight breeze and clouds all around, no point to linger long. I took a couple of photos and a GPS reading, then descended. I soon discovered a faint path heading more right, it was now pretty obvious that this would be a short-cut hitting my ascent trail near the beginning. I was back at the car about 20 minutes after leaving the summit.
