How to get there:
From Bergen, drive south tovards Stavanger, then take the ferry to Våge. This ferry is about 35-40 minutes.
From Våge, drive south. Turn right following signs for Reksteren, the road is pretty long and narrow, first
going north, then east and north to Hope. Here, the roads heads west. Pay attention as the road heads downhill, a small
parking area (2 cars) is located off the road on the right hand side, there is a small sign. The trail starts on
the left side of the road. This location is N60.05805, E005.37435, elevation about 60 meter.
Route:
Follow the trail that starts from an information sign directly acroos from the parking. The trail is well
marked in the beginning, but I ´managed to loose it higher up. In any event, it is pretty easy to find
Gjøvågsvarden. Good views from here. There are two locations with very similar
elevation near 305 meter.
Note however, that the highest point (307 m) on this mountain is located almost 500 meter south.
A small trail continues to this point marked with a pointed rock. Comments:
I took the 0730 ferry to Våge, it was still dark when arriving
at Tysnes. I drove all the way around to the Reksteren island, the towards the end
of the road where I had planned to start my hike. However, when driving down the hill
about 1 kilometer before my intended destination, I noticed this trailhead and a small
area for parking. The sign said Gjøvågsvarden 2 kilometer.
I started hiking at 0915 and with some snow and ice, the trail had some slippery sections.
Well marked in the beginning, higher up not easy to follow. There is a stretch that is rather
steepish, I followed some old footprints and ascended with little difficulty. Arrival at the
south summit (the highest point)
in little less than one hour. Nice weather. I next headed
north to the spot named Gjøvågsvarden,
this is perhaps a somewhat better
viewpoint. Descending in about the same time back to my car.
