How to get there:
A good point of reference is the small community Hosteland, located north of Masfjorden. To get there from Bergen, drive north on E-39. Just before E-39 enters the 4 km long Eikefet tunnel, there is a choice of route. Forking left onto Hwy. 570, then connect from Masfjordneset to Duesund by (cable) ferry. This is a scenic option. Alternatively, continue on E-39 passing the two fingers of Masfjorden, then an uphill tunnel to the intersection with Hwy. 571. Turn left here, descending on the north side of Masfjorden to meet Hwy. 570 near Hosteland.
The third, and perhaps best way, is to use the ferry from Leirvåg. Turn left in the very first traffic circle in Knarvik (immediately after the bridge), follow Hwy. 57 to Leirvåg. This ferry leaves 15 minutes past the hour. The return ferry leaves Sløvågen 15 minutes before the hour. The crossing takes 20 minutes. From Sløvågen, you have 14 kilometer to reach Hosteland.
From Hosteland, take Hwy. 570 west to the intersection with road 5438 signed for Sleire. (or arrive here directly from Sløvågen). Note that this exit is on the left (south) side of Hwy. 570. Drive north towards Sleire, but fork right immediately before the road again crosses the river (right to left side, as seen when driving). This is just before lake Sleirsvatnet. Find parking immediately after the first right bend on this road, the location is N60.87337, E5.21182, elevation about 37 meter.
Route description:
Continue along the road (fork right to enter the valley). Follow the road uphill, after about 900 meter you will have a small lake (elevation 97 m) on your left haand side. From here, one may turn right and walk directly to the summit without any difficulties. However, one may also follow a trail all the way. To do this, continue along the forest road as it descends slightly. You should locate a trail going right, just before the road crosses a small creek. The trail will become an old forest road and take you up into the col between Brunane and Setrefjellet. Here, the well marked trail turns right (west) and ascends to the summit of Brunane.
Comments:
This was my 5th. peak (of 7) climbed on this day. I walked up the road to the lake. Since I did not know about the trail, I headed directly to the summit from the lake. At the summit, I noticed the trail and decided to follow it on my return hike. I was on top around 1210.
