How to get there:
This mountain is the highest near the south-west coast of Jamaica. The coastal area near the
peak is called Bluefields Bay. Locate the main coastal Hwy. A2. It runs east from western Jamaica,
then turns more south as you approach Bluefields Bay. Your turnoff is at location
N18.19874, W078.04442. Take this narrow road, paved, but with bad potholes, as it climbs uphill.
You will arrive at a sign saying Welcome to Cave Mountain near location N18.21069, W078.04508.
Fork right here. Next, continue to follow the main road until you arrive at location
N18.19306, W078.00473, elevation close to 760 meter. There is parking for one car on your right.
A small, but very clear trail starts here. This is the trailhead.
Route:
Follow the trail gently uphill. You will
see some old buildings on your right. The trail bends left
and descends slightly. Ascend the hill in front (slightly left).
The summit area is mainly free
from dense vegetation. The highest point, however, has quite a few bushes nearby.
Comments:
I decided to explore the hill directly above our hotel, by car. Driving uphill, i suddenly
heard some noise and quickly realized that my left rear tyre was flat. This road is paved,
but with many holes and possibly sharp rocks. Very unfortunate. I was in a gentle uphill, but
decided that this would still be ok. Backing up a few meter got
me to a spot where other vehicles
could pass.
I continued to the trailhead, observing that this ascent would essentially be a walk-up. A nice, short
walk brought me to the highest point.
The next hill south had several antennas, but clearly lower.
A couple of hills in the same area as this one, were also very similar in height.
Next, I drove slowly back down, making a stop along the way to capture the nice views of the coast below,
both going south as well as
the one stretching more west.
